Dear Mom and Dad,
Our class has been learning about Digital Virtue and how to use technology in a healthier and more intentional way. We wanted to share what we’ve learned with you, because we love you so much and want the best for our family.
I know how much you use your phone—and I see it a lot, especially when you’re in your room or alone. I would really love it if we could spend more time together without screens. It means a lot to me when you’re fully present.
Here are some of the goals we’re trying to follow at St. Mary of the Angels, and I thought you might like to try some of them too:
- Use electronics intentionally—for the purpose they were meant for, like communication, work, directions, or calendars—not for entertainment or mindless scrolling.
- Be present with family. Instead of watching shows or being on your phone alone, come watch something with us kids or hang out together. It shows us that we matter to you.
- Put the phone away when someone is talking—especially when I’m trying to share something with you. Also avoid using it when you’re driving, crossing the street, or in special places like church.
- Respect screen-free spaces, like bedrooms, the dinner table, the bathroom, or the library.
- Switch phones off during meals—whether at home or at a restaurant—so we can have better conversations as a family.
- Set screentime limits: try limiting your use of TikTok or social media to 30 minutes a day.
- Avoid electronics during important times, like the first hour of the morning, mealtimes, and the last hour before bed. It helps you rest better, start the day right, and connect with us more.
- Be careful with AI. It doesn’t always tell the truth and can sometimes give wrong answers… it hallucinates!
We’re trying to be more thoughtful about our screen time, and I’ve started limiting my own to about 2 to 3 hours a day. I hope we can work on these habits together as a family!
Thank you for always supporting me. I love you both so much.
Love,
